A friend of the family used to make these breads for Christmas back in the 60's--and wouldn't share the recipe. I waited all year for this bread! Her daughter caught a ride back to college with me--and as my thank-you gift, she managed to get a copy of it for me!

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, blend all the bread ingredients. Pour into 2 greased and floured 8"x3 1/2" glass loaf pans. Bake at 325 degrees 1 hour, 20 minutes (check with a toothpick and make sure it comes out clean). Set on cooling racks and prick tops of breads all over with a toothpick. When cool, remove from pans and place on large squares of foil.
  2. For glaze, combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and cook over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved. stirring constantly. Seta aside to cool and thicken. pour glaze on top of breads and sides, and then wrap in the foil.

    This is from the author--I pushed publish too soon! The glaze takes the juice of 1 orange--not a lemon!
