  1. Beat butter, sugar, Large eggs together for 5 min (not with an electric mixer, as recipe is for 1907); then add in the water, flour sifted with the cream of tartar and baking soda. Beat another five min. Pour into jellyroll pan and have batter 1/2-inch thick. Bake quickly. (you'll need to look at a modern-day cookbook for temp & baking time).
  2. Run warm water on a clean towel; Wring cloth out of warm water and turn cake into this towel. Spread with jelly and roll in confectioner's sugar. Roll in a dry towel and use the next day.
