.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20lot%20of%20people%20think%20that%20you%20can%E2%80%99t%20find%20real%20food%20at%20discount%20stores%20like%20Aldi%20and%20Save-a-Lot,%20but%20I%20disagree.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20%22real%20food%22%20means%20to%20you%20%22only%20organic,%20grassfed,%20pastured,%20etc.%22%20then%20no%20%E2%80%93%20you%E2%80%99re%20%20not%20going%20to%20find%20that%20at%20Aldi.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20if%20real%20food%20can%20simply%20mean%20FOOD%20%E2%80%93%20with%20one%20ingredient,%20things%20that%20grow%20in%20the%20ground%20%E2%80%93%20then%20%20you%20can%20find%20plenty%20of%20basic%20staples%20at%20Save-a-Lot%20if%20you%20like.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20What%20Does%20a%20Real%20Foodie%20Buy%20At%E2%80%A6?%20series%20is%20generously%20sponsored%20by%20Plan%20to%20Eat,%20where%20you%20can%20use%20the%20Grocery%20Store%20Menu%20to%20organize%20your%20shopping%20by%20grocery%20store%20and%20even%20set%20defaults%20for%20certain%20items%20to%20go%20on%20the%20list%20where%20it%E2%80%99s%20least%20expensive.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere%E2%80%99s%20what%20I%20still%20buy%20at%20Aldi%20and%20Save-a-Lot%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Emustard%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eproduce:%20bananas,%20avocados%20(always%20a%20great%20deal),%20pineapples,%20sometimes%20other%20fruits%20(but%20watch%20the%20quality%20closely),%20cauliflower,%20broccoli,%20baby%20carrots,%20peppers,%20onions,%20sometimes%20cucumbers,%20zucchini,%20potatoes,%20and%20more.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIs%20their%20produce%20organic?%20No.%20But%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20always%20buy%20organic;%20I%20just%20can%E2%80%99t%20stomach%20the%20cost%20or%20always%20even%20find%20it.%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20be%20scared%20of%20every%20vegetable%E2%80%A6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Evinegar%20(for%20cleaning)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ebaking%20soda%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eplastic%20zippered%20bags%20(which%20I%20use%20infrequently%20but%20still%20need%20to%20have%20on%20hand)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ecanned%20salmon%20(Aldi%20has%20Alaskan%20salmon%20%E2%80%93%20as%20long%20as%20it%E2%80%99s%20wild%20caught,%20for%20something%20like%20salmon%20patties,%20I%E2%80%99m%20not%20going%20to%20be%20too%20picky!%20I%20think%20Save-a-Lot%E2%80%99s%20brand%20is%20caught%20somewhere%20sketchy%E2%80%A6)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOn%20Elitism%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20used%20to%20always%20buy%20canned%20tomatoes%20at%20Aldi%20or%20Save-a-Lot,%20and%20I%20would%20never%20tell%20you%20not%20to.%20Yes,%20there%E2%80%99s%20BPA%20in%20the%20cans.%20Yes,%20that%E2%80%99s%20no%20good.%20But%20is%20it%20a%20reason%20to%20stress%20out%20and%20spend%20more%20than%20your%20budget%20will%20allow%20on%20tomatoes?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENo.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20anyone%20who%20makes%20you%20feel%20horribly%20about%20buying%20tomatoes,%20for%20goodness%20sake,%20should%20be%20ashamed%20of%20themselves.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%E2%80%99re%20least%20expensive%20at%20Aldi,%20and%20I%20still%20have%20some%20%22backups%22%20in%20my%20cupboard%20from%20there.%20I%E2%80%99m%20not%20going%20to%20throw%20them%20out%20just%20because%20of%20the%20can%20linings.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20can%20you%20do%20better%20than%20that%20on%20a%20budget?%20Possibly,%20yes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBest%20case%20scenario%20for%20canned%20tomatoes%20on%20the%20cheap%20is,%20certainly,%20to%20can%20your%20own.%20But%20if%20that%E2%80%99s%20simply%20not%20something%20you%20can%20do,%20then%20you%20shouldn%E2%80%99t%20feel%20like%20you%20have%20to%20avoid%20tomatoes%20just%20because%20you%20can%E2%80%99t%20afford%20them%20in%20fancy%20glass%20jars.%20Second%20best%20is%20to%20try%20Costco,%20where%20they%20sell%20BPA%20free%20cans%20of%20organic%20tomato%20products.%20(Here%E2%80%99s%20what%20else%20I%20buy%20at%20Costco.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20if%20Aldi%20or%20Save-a-Lot%20or%20a%20sale%20at%20your%20local%20big%20box%20store%20is%20your%20best%20option,%20then%20you%20say%20your%20meal%20prayers,%20enjoy%20your%20from-scratch%20cooking,%20and%20focus%20on%20the%20fact%20that%20you%E2%80%99re%20getting%20great%20lycopene%20and%20other%20nutrients%20from%20those%20tomatoes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWith%20that%20in%20mind,%20and%20remembering%20that%20many%20budgets%20aren%E2%80%99t%20able%20to%20stretch%20like%20mine%20has%20recently,%20here%E2%80%99s%20what%20I%20used%20to%20buy%20when%20budget%20took%20more%20priority%20than%20organics:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eoatmeal%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ecanned%20beans%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Etomatoes%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Epasta%20and%20sauce%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Elemon%20juice%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ecanned%20fruit%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ebutter%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Echeese%20%E2%80%93%20know%20your%20price%20point!%20A%20good%20sale%20is%20often%20better%20than%20Aldi%E2%80%99s%20shredded%20cheese%20price%E2%80%A6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(sometimes)%20nuts%20and%20dried%20fruit%20%E2%80%93%20you%20really%20need%20to%20know%20price%20point%20on%20these,%20because%20often%20Aldi%E2%80%99s%20nuts%20are%20in%208%20oz.%20packages%20and%20more%20expensive%20than%20many%20other%20options.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOn%20Animal%20Products%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDo%20I%20buy%20meat,%20eggs,%20milk%20or%20cheese%20at%20Aldi?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENo.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20do
