Ingredients
- 1 lb of rhubarb
- 1 lb of fresh Bing cherries
- 1/4 cup of water
- 3/4 cup of sugar
- 6 pods green cardamom, cracked seeds removed
- 6 cloves
- 2 pinches of Kashmiri chili
- 2 large cinnamon sticks

%20was%20interested%20in%20swapping%20me%20a%20Twinkie%20for%20a%20Gravenstein%20apple.%20I%20quickly%20became%20known%20around%20the%20school%20yard%20as%20Applecore%20Gori%20since%20remembering%20my%20moms%20no%20waste%20rule%20I%20ate%20the%20entire%20apple.%20Like%20a%20goat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20a%20small%20goat%20I%20also%20learned%20to%20forage%20around%20the%20neighborhood.%20I%20learned%20to%20pick%20and%20eat%20sour%20grass,%20parts%20of%20certain%20flowers%20had%20centers%20that%20contained%20a%20sweet%20nectar.%20There%20were%20edible%20berries%20in%20Golden%20Gate%20Park%20around%20the%20corner,%20and%20it%20seemed%20like%20nearly%20everyone's%20yard,%20even%20in%20the%20midst%20of%20a%20neighborhood%20of%20drifting%20sand%20dunes,%20had%20some%20tree%20that%20produced%20some%20sort%20of%20fruit.%20Later,%20when%20I%20moved%20to%20Los%20Angeles,%20I%20loved%20having%20lemons%20and%20avocados%20in%20the%20backyard,%20strawberry%20guava%20trees%20and%20loquats%20which%20a%20lot%20of%20people%20ignored%20but%20which%20make%20excellent%20chutney.%20Now,%20here%20in%20Sonoma%20all%20sorts%20of%20edible%20plants%20abound.%20%20I've%20planted%20fruit%20trees%20at%20our%20new%20house,%20and%20I%20also%20do%20my%20share%20of%20gleaning.%20But%20even%20here%20in%20Sonoma,%20I%20can't%20always%20find%20everything%20I%20want%20growing%20by%20the%20side%20of%20the%20road.%20That's%20where%20the%20sale%20gene%20kicks%20in.%20When%20they%20throw%20up%20those%20numbers%20and%20percentage%20marks,%20that's%20when%20I%20come%20running.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELast%20week%20there%20was%20a%20sale%20at%20our%20local%20Whole%20Foods.%20They%20were%20offering%20beautiful%20organic%20cherries%20for%201.99%20a%20pound.%20I%20was%20so%20there.%20At%20the%20same%20time%20I%20saw%20some%20great%20local%20rhubarb%20for%20cheap%20so%20I%20snapped%20that%20up%20too.%20So%20there%20I%20was,%20rhubarb%20and%20cherries%20in%20hand,%20what%20to%20do,%20what%20to%20do?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESince%20I%20am%20still%20in%20a%20temporary%20kitchen,%20I%20have%20very%20few%20of%20my%20usual%20cooking%20tools%20because%20of%20my%20%22Fragile!%22%20%22Glass!%22%20brilliant%20idea%20so%20it%20seemed%20that%20baking%20anything%20was%20out%20of%20the%20question.%20I%20did%20have%20a%20large%20skillet%20and%20measuring%20spoons,%20and%20that%20seemed%20to%20be%20all%20I%20needed%20to%20make%20a%20quick%20and%20tasty%20chutney.%20There%20are%20a%20lot%20of%20ways%20to%20make%20chutney.%20This%20is%20a%20very%20simple%20one%20and%20you%20can%20adjust%20the%20seasoning%20to%20whatever%20you'd%20like%20heat-wise.%20Just%20taste%20and%20adjust%20as%20you%20go.%20It's%20that%20easy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECherry%20Rhubarb%20Chutney%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere's%20What%20You%20Need:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECut%20the%20tough%20ends%20and%20the%20little%20green%20leaves%20off%20of%20the%20stallks%20if%20there%20are%20any.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChop%20the%20rhubarb%20into%201/2%20inch%20pieces.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPut%20the%20cut%20rhubarb%20into%20a%20large%20bowl.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPit%20the%20cherries.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECut%20the%20pitted%20cherries%20into%20halves.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMix%20the%20cherry%20halves%20with%20the%20rhubarb%20pieces.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMix%20the%20water%20and%20sugar%20together%20in%20a%20skillet.%20Turn%20the%20heat%20up%20to%20medium%20and%20mix%20the%20water%20and%20sugar%20together%20until%20they're%20well%20blended.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20in%20the%20rhubarb%20and%20cherries.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EToss%20in%20the%20cinnamon%20sticks,%20the%20cinnamon,%20the%20pinches%20of%20kashmiri%20chili,%20the%20cardamom%20seeds,%20and%20the%20cloves.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBring%20the%20water%20to%20a%20boil,%20and%20when%20it%20does%20boil,%20turn%20the%20heat%20down%20to%20simmer.%20Cook%20the%20rhubarb%20and%20cherries%20down%20for%20about%2035%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20the%20rhubarb%20and%20cherries%20have%20softened%20and%20cooked%20down%20add%20in%20the%20lemon%20juice.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELet%20the%20chutney%20cool%20down.%20Check%20the%20heat%20factor.%20If%20you'd%20like%20to%20add%20more%20chili%20do%20so%20but%20in%20very%20small%20amounts%20until%20you%20have%20the%20chutney%20as%20hot%20as%20you'd%20like%20it.%20Chili%20added%20to%20foods%20takes%20a%20while%20to%20sink%20in%20and%20when%20you%20add%20heat,%20let%20it%20sit%20for%2015%20minutes%20or%20so%20and%20check%20again%20before%20you%20add%20more.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServe%20the%20chutney%20warm%20or%20at%20room%20temperature,%20but%20if%20you're%20not%20serving%20it%20right%20away,%20refrigerate%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20chutney%20can%20be%20used%20on%20a%20sandwich,%20with%20chicken%20or%20pork,%20even%20as%20a%20topping%20for%20ice%20cream%20or%20yogurt.%20Best%20of%20all%20it%20can%20be%20made%20with%20minimum%20equipment%20and%20in%20very%20little%20time.%20Coming%20up%20next,%20a%20cool%20summer%20ice%20cream%20and%20some%20cool%20equipment%20from%20OXO.%20Follow%20along%20on%20Twitter%20@kathygori%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
