.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPasta%20Salad%20with%20Broccoli,%20Carrots,%20and%20Green%20Onions%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDo%20not%20check%20your%20address%20bar:%20you%E2%80%99re%20still%20here%20at%20The%20Manhattan%20[food]%20Project%20and%20yet%E2%80%93and%20yet!%E2%80%93you%20are%20still%20seeing%20broccoli%20in%20the%20picture%20above.%20My%20nemesis,%20my%20foe,%20the%20vegetable%20that%20gets%20the%20bulk%20of%20my%20scorn%20has%20somehow%20made%20it%20into%20our%20kitchen%20and%20into%20food%E2%80%93into%20pasta,%20of%20all%20things%E2%80%93and%20somehow%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20throw%20a%20fit.%20Well,%20not%20a%20large%20fit.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMichael%20was%20able%20to%20get%20away%20with%20this%20subterfuge%20because%20this%20farfalle%20and%20broccoli%20pasta%20salad%20was%20part%20of%20a%20sizable%20spread%20we%20had%20set%20up%20for%20a%20Sunday%20afternoon%20of%20watching%20the%20World%20Cup%20(a%20sporting%20event%20that%20has%20completely%20drawn%20me%20in)%20with%20some%20of%20Michael%E2%80%99s%20colleagues%20from%20his%20lab.%20They%20went%20out%20for%20a%20run%20Sunday%20morning%20and%20therefore%20missed%20most%20of%20Italy%20versus%20New%20Zealand,%20so%20we%20DVR%E2%80%99d%20it%20and%20had%20it%20queued%20up%20to%20watch%20when%20they%20came%20over%20a%20little%20before%20noon.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20how%20did%20I%20let%20Michael%20get%20away%20with%20bringing%20broccoli%20into%20our%20kitchen?%20I%20insisted%20on%20making%20this:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDitalini%20all%20agliata%20verde%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOf%20course%20Michael%20had%20to%20turn%20the%20afternoon%20into%20a%20competition%20of%20sorts%20when%20I%20made%20this%20suggestion,%20so%20Saturday%20night%20found%20us%20trash-talking%20each%20other%20using%20every%20clich%C3%A9%20we%20could%20think%20of%20from%20Top%20Chef%20and%20then%20Michael%20making%20our%20guests%20feel%20just%20a%20wee%20bit%20uncomfortable%20as%20he%20told%20them%20to%20tell%20us%20which%20pasta%20salad%20they%20liked%20more.%20A%20winner%20was%20not%20determined,%20but%20both%20bowls%20had%20far%20less%20than%20they%20did%20when%20I%20laid%20them%20out,%20so%20I%20guess%20it%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20matter%20that%20much%20anyway.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20simple%20panino:%20cacio%20de%20roma,%20fresh%20mozzarella,%20roasted%20red%20peppers%20and%20prosciutto%20Daniele%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20for%20the%20main%20course,%20we%20had%20a%20dilemma:%20how%20to%20provide%20a%20filling,%20satisfying%20dish%20but%20still%20avoid%20having%20to%20use%20the%20stove%20and/or%20oven%20if%20possible.%20We%20knew%20the%20weather%20would%20bring%20humidity%20and%20heat,%20so%20anything%20we%20could%20do%20to%20reduce%20that%20would%20be%20a%20help%20in%20keeping%20the%20living%20and%20dining%20rooms%20cool,%20so%20I%20suggested%20making%20panini%20with%20the%20Griddler.%20I%20picked%20up%20a%20selection%20of%20cheeses%20at%20Fairway,%20settling%20on%20fresh%20mozzarella,%20cacio%20di%20Roma%20and%20pientino,%20all%20mild%20cheeses%20that%20melted%20nicely%20and%20paired%20well%20with%20a%20little%20domestic%20prosciutto%20and%20roasted%20red%20peppers.%20Our%20guests%20could%20pick%20the%20amount%20of%20bread%20they%20wanted%20and%20then%20build%20the%20sandwich%20to%20their%20own%20specifications%20and%20then%20I%20would%20press%20them.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFairways%20Mixed%20Olives%20with%20Roasted%20and%20Seasoned%20Almonds%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20had%20other%20snacks%20as%20well,%20ranging%20from%20hummus%20and%20pita%20chips%20to%20lots%20of%20olives%20and%20these%20seasoned%20almonds%20first%20featured%20in%20an%20episode%20of%20Good%20Eats,%20and%20dessert%20entailed%20a%20big%20bunch%20of%20grapes%20and%20a%20pint%20of%20strawberries.%20We%20had%20sangria%20and%20I%20was%20planning%20on%20making%20caipirinhas,%20but%20everyone%20ended%20up%20having%20to%20leave%20before%20the%202:30%20Brazil%20vs.%20C%C3%B4te%20d%E2%80%99Ivoire%20game%20so%20Michael%20and%20I,%20free%20from%20the%20constraints%20of%20a%20normal%20Sunday%20as%20we%20had%20managed%20to%20get%20cleaning,%20exercise%20and%20food%20shopping%20out%20of%20the%20way,%20spent%20a%20leisurely%20afternoon%20watching%20the%20game%20and%20sipping%20on%20some%20cocktails,%20all%20the%20while%20grazing%20on%20our%20leftovers%20when%20hunger%20struck.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWatching%20the%20World%20Cup%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20was%20a%20surprisingly%20delightful%20afternoon,%20and%20something%20I%20hope%20becomes%20a%20tradition%20around%20these%20parts:%20spending%20a%20quiet%20Sunday%20afternoon%20feasting%20on%20food%20and%20watching%20sporting%20events%20or%20a%20movie%20or%20whatever%20with%20friends.%20And%20since%20I%E2%80%99m%20in%20a%20charitable%20mood,%20I%E2%80%99m%20even%20deigning%20to%20share%20Michael%E2%80%99s%20magical%20pasta%20salad%20recipe%E2%80%93if%20you%20like%20broccoli,%20well,%20I%E2%80%99m%20told%20that%20this%20is%20good.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBring%20a%20large%20pot%20of%20water%20to%20boil%20and%20cook%20pasta%20about%20one%20or%20two%20minutes%20less%20than%20recommended%20on%20package%20directions.%20Clean%20and%20slice%20the%20carrots%20into%20thin%20rounds,%20and%20cut%20the%20broccoli%20into%20small%20florets%20and%20roughly%20dice%20the%20stalks,%20and%20thinly%20slice%20the%20green%20onions.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20the%20peanut%20oil%20in%20a%20skillet%20over%20medium-high%20heat,%20and%20add%20minced%20garlic%20and%20saute%20for%20about%2030%20seconds.%20Add%20broccoli%20and%20carrots,%20and%20cook%203-5%20minutes%20until%20the%20vegetables%20are%20softened%20but%20are%20still%20crisp.%20Add%20the%20scallions%20and%20cook%20for%20another%2030%20seconds,%20season%20well%20with%20salt%20and%20remove%20from%20heat.%20Mix%20the%20vegetables%20and%20the%20pasta,%20let%20cool%20and%20then%20add%20tomatoes%20and%20cheese%20(note:%20if%20cooking%20ahead%20of%20time,%20wait%20to%20add%20the%20tomatoes%20and%20cheese%20until%20about%20an%20hour%20before%20serving).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAll%20ingredients%20(save%20the%20pasta)%20can%20be%20increased%20to%20taste;%20if%20you%20like%20certain%20vegetables%20and%20want%20to%20have%20more,%20adjust%20accordingly%20and%20turn%20it%20into%20a%20more,%20the%20merrier%20situation.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20an%20added%20bonus,%20we%20even%20learned%20something%20from%20one%20of%20Michael%E2%80%99s%20Italian%20colleagues%20on%20how%20to%20make%20the%20best%20iced%20coffee%20ever%20(but%20to%20be%20fair,%20both%20have%20imparted%20wonderful%20culinary%20knowledge;%20I%E2%80%99ve%20learned%20an%20astounding%20amount%20in%20the%20short%20time%20I%E2%80%99ve%20known%20them)%20which%20we%20will%20be%20sharing%20in%20an%20upcoming%20post.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
