Dear Food Diary:
While looking for my Panda Donuts, I discovered Ecute at the JR Ueno Station. Bright lights, spotless displays and the friendly hellos welcomed me along with tons and tons of eats! Sweet & savory goodies.*big smile*.
Found a great rice bento spot, elaborate Japanese whole grape jelly and even picked some side dishes for dinner…
It reminded me of Japan Week and how crazy New Yorkers were about the bentos, only here, it’s just an everyday affair. Since it was raining outside (again), I decided to buy a bento lunch plus dessert, stand around the big flower pot down the hall and eat my lunch standing, like a local commuter. ,%20I%20decided%20to%20buy%20a%20bento%20lunch%20plus%20dessert,%20stand%20around%20the%20big%20flower%20pot%20down%20the%20hall%20and%20eat%20my%20lunch%20standing,%20like%20a%20local%20commuter.%20(Monkey%20see,%20monkey%20do).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20once%20heard%20Morimoto%20say,%20the%20Japanese%20think%20of%20rice/noodle%20as%20the%20main%20dish%20and%20the%20rest%20as%20side%20dishes,%20where%20we%20in%20the%20U.S,%20see%20it%20the%20other%20way%20around.%20Which%20is%20why%20they%20are%20so%20serious%20about%20their%20rice%20here.%20This%20shop%20caught%20my%20eyes%20with%20their%20steaming%20hot%20variety%20of%20rice%20on%20a%20steam%20table%20behind%20the%20counter.%20Looked%20so%20fresh%20and%20it%20smelled%20really%20good.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20rainbow%20of%20rice,%20cooked%20with%20all%20sorts%20of%20different%20ingredients,%20beans,%20tiny%20little%20fish,%20fish%20eggs,%20ginkgo%20nuts,%20plum,%20etc.%20Placed%20in%20bentos,%20rolled%20in%20tube%20like%20shapes%20and%20sold%20by%20weight.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20got%20the%20bento%20with%20soy%20flavored%20rice%20with%20bits%20and%20pieces%20of%20mushrooms.%20Topped%20with%20chicken,%20eggplant,%20bamboo,%20peppers,%20shishito%20and%20a%20sprinkle%20of%20sesame%20and%20seaweed.%20With%20a%20side%20of%20pickles.%20At%20about%20$7.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%E2%80%99s%20no%20doubt,%20the%20rice%20is%20fantastic.%20It%E2%80%99s%20plump,%20chewy%20and%20soft%20at%20the%20same%20time.%20It%20almost%20resembles%20sticky%20rice.%20There%E2%80%99s%20a%20nice%20bite%20to%20it%20and%20very%20flavorful.%20Absorbing%20all%20the%20liquid%20from%20the%20chicken%20and%20veggies.%20I%20usually%20don%E2%80%99t%20eat%20a%20lot%20of%20rice,%20but%20I%20finished%20every%20last%20grain.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EP.S.%20Chubby%E2%80%99s%20Rating:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20Minamoto%20Kitchoan%20had%20a%20variety%20of%20wagashi%20(Japanese%20sweets),%20some%20I%20haven%E2%80%99t%20seen%20at%20the%205th%20Ave%20store%20in%20NYC.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Japanese%20practice%20the%20art%20of%20eating%20with%20our%20eyes%20first%20to%20perfection.%20Their%20packaging%20is%20always%20exquisite,%20down%20to%20every%20little%20detail.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThese%20grapes%20caught%20my%20attention.%20A%20whole%20grape,%20seeds%20and%20all.%20I%20wish%20I%20could%20read%20what%20it%20said!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20was%20like%20opening%20a%20little%20gift%E2%80%A6%20Something%20about%20%E2%80%9Ctreasure%20pearl%E2%80%9D%20(from%20the%20Chinese%20characters%20I%20can%20understand).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%E2%80%99s%20a%20thin%20sugar%20coating%20and%20a%20jelly/gummy%20outer%20layer.%20It%20does%20look%20like%20a%20precious%20jewel.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAn%20obscenely%20juicy%20burst%20of%20the%20most%20concentrated%20grape%20flavors.%20Think%20the%20best%20concord%20grape%20you%E2%80%99ve%20ever%20had%20and%20then%20magnify%20that%20by%20100.%20Brighter,%20like%20a%20mix%20between%20the%20sweet%20moscato%20grape%20with%20that%20a%20fresh%20fruty%20note%20and%20concord%20grapes.There%E2%80%99s%20a%20perfect%20balance%20of%20sweetness%20and%20a%20faint%20tartness.%20A%20bit%20of%20chewiness%20from%20the%20outter%20layer%20and%20that%20tender%20natural%20juicy%20and%20flesh.%20Amazing.%20Seriously,%20this%20is%20like%20a%20grape%20on%20steroids.%20I%E2%80%99ve%20never%20had%20anything%20like%20it.%20Well,%20it%20had%20to%20be,%20it%20was%20about%20$3%20a%20piece!%20But%20really%20worth%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20grew%20up%20eating%20these%20%E2%80%9Cpi%20pa%E2%80%9D%20aka%20loquats.%20They%20look%20a%20bit%20like%20an%20apricot,%20but%20totally%20different%20in%20flavor.%20It%20has%20a%20delicate%20flesh,%20plump%20and%20juicy.%20Sweet%20with%20a%20bit%20of%20acidity.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20I%20said,%20the%20packaging%20is%20just%20so%20adorable%20isn%E2%80%99t%20it?%20Surely%20added%20to%20the%20close%20to%20$3%20a%20piece%20price%20tag.%20Regardless,%20it%E2%80%99s%20just%20so%20pretty%20and%20cute.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20melt%20in%20my%20mouth%20jelly.%20Filled%20with%20it%E2%80%99s%20own%20juices.%20Very%20mild%20and%20delicate%20flavors.%20It%20is%20really%20good,%20but%20not%20as%20strong%20of%20an%20impact%20as%20the%20grape.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhite%20peaches%20are%20in%20season%20right%20now,%20they%20are%20really%20fantastic%20here,%20so%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20feel%20like%20paying%20close%20to%20$10%20for%20a%20peach%20jelly,%20but%20I%E2%80%99ve%20heard%20these%20are%20really%20extraordinary,%20so%20maybe%20one%20of%20these%20days%20I%E2%80%99ll%20give%20it%20a%20try.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20cutest%20were%20these%20fish%20bowl%20jelly,%20but%20at%20$10,%20I%E2%80%99m%20not%20so%20sure%20I%20can%20justify%20it.%20Maybe%20when%20guests%20come%20visit.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EP.S.%20Chubby%E2%80%99s%20Rating:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20walked%20around%20before%20and%20after%20my%20lunch,%20taking%20photos%20of%20each%20and%20every%20Panda%20dessert%20I%20found,%20walked%20around%20the%20few%20shops%20for%20shopping%20and%20even%20had%20a%20panda%20iced%20hot%20chocolate,%20befo
