Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, chopped
- 28-30 ounces chicken broth
- 2-3 sweet potatoes (about 1 1/2 pounds), peeled and cubed
- 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger

%20soup%20for%20fall.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESweet%20potato%20bisque%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt's%20time%20for%20another%20recipe%20from%20the%20Secret%20Recipe%20Club%20(SRC)!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere's%20how%20the%20SRC%20works:%20each%20month%20I%20am%20assigned%20another%20member's%20blog%20(a%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Edifferent%20one%20each%20month).%20I%20then%20pick%20any%20recipe%20from%20that%20blogger's%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Esite,%20make%20it%20and%20write%20about%20it%20here.%20There's%20also%20a%20link%20hop%20at%20the%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eend%20of%20the%20post%20so%20that%20I%20(and%20you)%20can%20check%20out%20all%20the%20other%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eparticipating%20blogs.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20think%20fate%20intervened%20in%20my%20assignment%20this%20month.%20Imagine%20my%20delight%20when%20I%20headed%20over%20to%20Fran's%20Favs%20and%20found%20that%20I%20was%20to%20pick%20a%20recipe%20from%20a%20self-described%20%22Italian%20foodie.%22%20That%20makes%20two%20of%20us!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt's%20always%20hard%20to%20pick%20just%20one%20recipe%20from%20an%20archive%20as%20big%20as%20Fran's%20but,%20with%20fall%20coming%20on,%20I%20gravitated%20toward%20the%20soups%20and%20one%20in%20particular%20caught%20my%20eye:%20sweet%20potato%20bisque.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUnlike%20Fran,%20whose%20folks%20were%20both%20great%20cooks%20(her%20dad%20even%20co-owned%20a%20restaurant,%20lucky%20girl!),%20I%20didn't%20grow%20up%20in%20a%20%22we-love-to-cook%22%20household%20--%20more%20of%20a%20%22we-need-to-cook-to-survive%22%20household,%20with%20occasional%20lapses%20for%20holidays%20(that's%20when%20the%20big%20Italian%20recipes%20came%20out%20of%20hiding)%20or%20my%20dad's%20specialty:%20homemade%20pizza.%20%20All%20of%20this%20means%20that,%20after%20only%20really%20learning%20to%20cook%20in%20my%20late%2020s,%20%20I%20came%20very,%20very%20late%20to%20the%20homemade%20soup%20party.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20once%20I%20armed%20myself%20with%20an%20immersion%20blender,%20there%20was%20no%20holding%20me%20back.%20Now%20I'm%20practically%20the%20Soup%20Nazi%20himself:%20mushroom,%20cream%20of%20asparagus,%20peanut,%20stracciatella,%20pumpkin,%20turnip,%20cauliflower%20...%20the%20list%20goes%20on.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20you%20can%20see%20why%20I%20gravitated%20toward%20Fran's%20bisque!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20bisque%20is%20really%20lovely,%20not%20only%20in%20taste%20and%20texture%20but%20also%20in%20color:%20gorgeous%20fall%20orange!%20We%20had%20it%20for%20dinner%20with%20Gruyere%20and%20prosciutto%20paninis;%20I%20was%20happy%20there%20was%20plenty%20leftover%20for%20lunch%20the%20next%20day,%20too.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFran's%20recipe,%20adapted%20from%20The%20Chicago%20Tribune%20Good%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEating%20Cookbook,%20looked%20pretty%20near%20perfect%20(and%20easy!)%20as%20written.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHowever,%20since%20the%20SRC%20permits%20us%20to%20adapt%20the%20recipe%20we%20choose,%20I%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ethought%20I%20should%20note%20that%20I%20made%20a%20few%20little%20changes,%20such%20as%20adding%20some%20fresh%20ginger%20(which%20really%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eenhanced%20the%20sweet%20potato%20flavor)%20and%20using%20fresh%20sweet%20potatoes.%20I%20had%20also%20intended%20to%20swirl%20in%20a%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Elittle%20sherry%20just%20before%20serving%20but%20I%20just%20plain%20forgot;%20next%20time%20I%20make%20this%20bisque,%20I%20will%20definitely%20add%20the%20sherry.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20be%20sure%20to%20top%20the%20soup%20with%20seasoned%20croutons%20before%20serving.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20made%20my%20own%20croutons%20by%20tossing%20some%20bread%20cubes%20with%20a%20little%20olive%20oil,%20seasoning%20the%20cubes%20with%20%20dried%20thyme%20and%20baking%20them%20at%20400%20degrees%20for%20about%2010%20minutes.%20I%20then%20sprinkled%20the%20cubes%20with%20a%20little%20grated%20parmesan%20cheese%20and%20continued%20to%20bake%20them%20another%20few%20minutes%20until%20the%20cheese%20melted%20and%20the%20bread%20cubes%20were%20toasty.%20If%20you%20don't%20have%20the%20time%20or%20inclination%20to%20make%20your%20own%20croutons,%20buy%20some,%20but%20don't%20forgo%20them%20in%20this%20bisque%20--%20they%20add%20a%20nice%20touch%20of%20seasoning%20and%20texture.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhat%20are%20your%20favorite%20fall%20soups?%20The%20Ninj%20wants%20to%20know.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESweet%20Potato%20Bisque%20(adapted%20from%20Fran's%20Favs)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Esherry%20(optional)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20soup%20pot,%20heat%20the%20olive%20oil%20and%20butter%20over%20medium%20heat.%20Add%20the%20chopped%20onion%20and%20garlic%20and%20cook%20until%20onion%20is%20soft%20(about%205%20minutes).%20Next,%20add%20the%20broth,%20ginger%20and%20sweet%20potato%20to%20the%20pot;%20bring%20the%20mixture%20to%20a%20boil,%20cover,%20reduce%20heat%20and%20cook%20until%20the%20potato%20is%20tender%20(about%2020%20minutes).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERemove%20the%20pot%20from%20the%20heat%20and,%20using%20an%20immersion%20blender,%20blend%20the%20soup%20until%20it%20is%20smooth.%20Season%20the%20soup%20to%20taste%20with%2
