%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20have%20a%20romantic%20notion%20about%20going%20on%20a%20picnic.%20This%20is%20reinforced%20every%20time%20I%20see%20one%20of%20those%20pretty%20picnic%20baskets%20for%20sale.%20You%20know%20the%20ones%20where%20everything%20has%20its%20place%20and%20all%20you%20need%20is%20the%20basket%20and%20some%20food?%20There%20are%202%20plates,%202%20sets%20of%20cutlery,%20glasses,%20an%20wine%20opener,%20a%20blanket%20and%20plenty%20of%20space%20for%20all%20the%20food%20one%20would%20take%20with.%20But,%20I%20never%20buy%20one%20when%20I%20see%20them%20as%20I%20know%20it%20would%20be%20a%20wasted%20expense.%20Dave%20and%20I%20do%20not%20go%20on%20picnics.%20We%20cannot%20drink%20on%20our%20beaches%20here,%20and%20that%20is%20the%20ideal%20place%20to%20have%20a%20picnic,%20sitting%20by%20the%20sea,%20watching%20the%20sun%20set%20over%20the%20bay.%20We%20do%20however%20have%20pseudo%20picnic%20meals%20when%20we%20travel.%20Nothing%20fancy%20and%20no%20blankets%20involved.%20We%20get%20a%20fresh%20baguette%20every%20day%20and%20it%20gets%20torn%20by%20hand%20and%20topped%20with%20whatever%20we%20have%20chosen,%20p%C3%A2t%C3%A9%20in%20France,%20pesto%20and%20proscuitto%20in%20Italy,%20cheese%20and%20ham%20in%20the%20UK.%20We%20have%20plastic%20knives%20and%20forks%20that%20we%20take%20along%20with%20us,%20and%20that%20is%20probably%20the%20only%20concession%20to%20a%20real%20picnic.%20Sometimes%20we%20sit%20on%20a%20park%20bench,%20other%20times%20we%20have%20enjoyed%20our%20meal%20in%20the%20car%20while%20it%20rains,%20and%20we%20have%20even%20had%20a%20few%20meals%20on%20the%20beach.%20One%20year%20we%20had%20bought%20a%20dozen%20eggs%20to%20have%20for%20our%20breakfasts%20and%20when%20we%20got%20to%20the%20resort%20in%20Tropea%20we%20were%20told%20that%20breakfast%20was%20included.%20Not%20wanting%20the%20eggs%20to%20go%20to%20waste,%20we%20hard%20boiled%20a%20few%20each%20day%20and%20made%20egg%20mayonnaise%20with%20them%20to%20enjoy%20on%20our%20fresh%20baguette.%20If%20I%20had%20thought%20about%20it%20with%20a%20bit%20more%20effort,%20I%20could%20have%20made%20Scotch%20eggs.%20These%20are%20the%20perfect%20things%20to%20include%20in%20any%20picnic%20basket,%20whether%20you%20are%20enjoying%20the%20romantic%20one%20I%20keep%20imagining,%20or%20a%20plain%20meal%20on%20the%20side%20of%20the%20road%20at%20a%20park%20bench.%20The%20eggs%20are%20the%20vessel%20for%20the%20sausage%20meat%20and%20you%20really%20have%20to%20buy%20the%20most%20flavourful,%20good%20quality%20sausage%20meat%20that%20you%20can.%20I%20did%20not%20like%20the%20fried%20version%20of%20this%20recipe,%20and%20so%20tried%20baking%20them.%20You%20don%E2%80%99t%20get%20that%20beautiful%20golden%20brown%20colour%20on%20the%20crumbs%20as%20you%20would%20if%20you%20baked%20them,%20but%20you%20also%20don%E2%80%99t%20get%20oily%20crumbs.%20I%20will%20leave%20the%20choice%20up%20to%20you%20how%20you%20cook%20them,%20but%20please%20make%20these%20Scotch%20eggs%20the%20next%20time%20you%20go%20on%20a%20picnic.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3g%20flat%20leaf%20parsley,%20finely%20chopped%201g%20sage,%20finely%20chopped%20Salt%20and%20freshly%20ground%20black%20pepper%20to%20season%205g%20flour%2045g%20bread%20crumbs%20Canola%20oil%20for%20frying%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBoil%205%20eggs%20until%20just%20hard%20boiled%20Place%20in%20cold%20water%20Once%20completely%20cold,%20peel%20the%20eggs%20and%20pat%20dry%20Place%20the%20olive%20oil%20into%20a%20frying%20pan%20Saut%C3%A9%20the%20leek%20until%20soft%20Set%20aside%20to%20cool%20Preheat%20the%20oven%20to%20180%C2%B0%20Celsius%20*%20Place%20the%20leek,%20sausage%20meat,%20parsley%20and%20sage%20into%20a%20bowl%20Season%20well%20Lightly%20whisk%20the%20remaining%20egg%20and%20add%20to%20the%20sausage%20meat%20Mix%20well%20so%20that%20everything%20is%20combined%20Place%20the%20flour%20into%20a%20bowl%20and%20season%20Roll%20each%20boiled%20egg%20in%20the%20flour%20Wrap%20each%20egg%20with%20approximately%20130g%20sausage%20meat,%20using%20damp%20hands%20Shape%20gently%20once%20completely%20wrapped%20Roll%20each%20wrapped%20egg%20in%20the%20breadcrumbs%20and%20shape%20Pour%20a%20thin%20layer%20of%20oil%20into%20a%20large%20frying%20pan%20Place%20onto%20a%20medium%20to%20hot%20temperature%20and%20heat%20Once%20the%20oil%20is%20hot%20gently%20place%20each%20egg%20into%20the%20pan%20Fry%20for%2010%20minutes,%20turning%20as%20the%20crumbs%20turn%20golden%20brown%20Make%20sure%20each%20side%20of%20the%20egg%20is%20cooked,%20including%20the%20ends%20Be%20careful%20as%20the%20eggs%20are%20fragile%20Remove%20from%20the%20pan%20and%20set%20aside%20to%20cool%20on%20some%20paper%20towel%20*%20Once%20the%20excess%20oil%20has%20been%20absorbed%20slice%20each%20egg%20in%20half%20lengthwise%20Sprinkle%20with%20salt%20and%20serve%20*%20I%20found%20that%20the%20sausage%20meat%20was%20not%20quite%20cooked%20and%20that%20the%20crumbs%20were%20very%20oily%20*%20I%20finished%20them%20off%20in%20the%20oven%20for%2010%20minutes%20*%20alternatively
