%20February%2023,%202015%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20must%20scroll%20through%20a%20dozen%20nature%20photos%20a%20week%20on%20Instagram%20even%20when%20things%20aren%E2%80%99t%20covered%20with%20notable%20amounts%20of%20snow.%20Roses,%20sunsets,%20trees,%20beaches.%20They%E2%80%99re%20lovely.%20I%20double-tap%20and%20keep%20scrolling.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20I%E2%80%99ve%20been%20in%20those%20gardens%20before,%20filled%20with%20the%20heady%20scent%20of%20gardenias%20under%20trees%20leaning%20with%20the%20weight%20of%20summer.%20I%E2%80%99ve%20seen%20a%20rose%20so%20perfect,%20with%20such%20an%20inviting%20perfume%20that%20it%E2%80%99s%20tempting%20to%20take%20a%20bite,%20or%20at%20least%20to%20kiss%20the%20petals.%20I%E2%80%99ve%20stood%20on%20a%20balcony%20overlooking%20the%20coast%20as%20a%20storm%20rolled%20in%20through%20the%20darkness,%20my%20hair%20whipping%20around%20my%20face%20and%20my%20stomach%20tight%20with%20awe%20and%20fear.%20You%20can%E2%80%99t%20double-tap%20and%20keep%20scrolling%20in%20those%20real%20perfect%20moments.%20They%20seize%20something%20in%20you%20in%20a%20way%20a%20picture%20can%E2%80%99t%20quite%20mimic.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20that%20moment%20overlooking%20the%20sea,%20I%20did%20step%20back%20inside%20to%20get%20my%20camera%20and%20film%20the%20wind%20because%20I%20wanted%20to%20remember.%20And%20I%E2%80%99m%20glad%20I%20have%20that%20little%20video%20clip.%20It%20does%20transport%20me%20in%20a%20way.%20But%20I%20can%20never%20truly%20go%20back.%20And%20if%20I%20could%20%E2%80%94%20if%20experiences%20like%20that%20were%20a%20dime%20a%20dozen%20%E2%80%94%20maybe%20they%20would%20stop%20moving%20me%20the%20way%20they%20do.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20I%20lost%20my%20grandmother%20in%20December,%20I%20started%20thinking%20a%20lot%20more%20about%20this.%20The%20loss%20feels%20overwhelming:%20all%20the%20moments%20my%20dad%20has%20recounted%20from%20his%20childhood.%20Their%20first%20tiny%20house.%20The%20frozen%20jeans%20off%20the%20clothesline.%20The%20sodas%20in%20a%20bucket%20of%20ice%20on%20the%20Fourth%20of%20July.%20The%20bath%20tub%20that%20was%20literally%20just%20a%20tub,%20filled%20with%20water%20heated%20on%20the%20stove,%20dingy%20and%20already%20cold%20after%20the%20girls%20bathed%20first%20with%20all%20the%20boys%20left%20to%20go.%20The%20white%20platters%20of%20biscuits.%20The%20porch%20swing.%20All%20flowing%20past%20like%20water%20into%20the%20ocean,%20unstoppable,%20unkeepable.%20Waves%20and%20waves%20and%20waves%20and%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPhoto%20by%20Erin%20Martinez%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAt%20her%20funeral%20I%20looked%20down%20at%20her%20sweet%20tiny%20fingers,%20curved%20with%20age.%20They%20rested,%20folded,%20one%20hand%20over%20another.%20The%20urge%20to%20take%20a%20photo%20immediately%20surged%20through%20me.%20The%20urge%20to%20keep%20her%20fingers%20with%20me,%20to%20be%20able%20to%20hold%20them,%20to%20see%20them%20tapping%20through%20flour.%20But%20the%20truth%20is%20that%20my%20memory%20had%20photos%20already.%20I%20have%20a%20photo%20of%20that%20very%20moment,%20even,%20with%20no%20camera%20needed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%E2%80%99s%20no%20moral%20to%20my%20thoughts%20today.%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20buy%20that%20%E2%80%9CStop%20taking%20photos%20and%20enjoy%20the%20moment!%E2%80%9D%20line,%20since%20I%20find%20it%20very%20enjoyable%20to%20capture,%20to%20document.%20I%20spend%20my%20life%20documenting,%20analyzing,%20revisiting.%20It%E2%80%99s%20who%20I%20am.%20My%20cousin-in-law,%20Erin%20Martinez,%20went%20back%20to%20my%20grandmother%E2%80%99s%20home%20after%20her%20funeral%20and%20took%20the%20most%20beautiful,%20evocative%20photos%20of%20her%20space.%20I%20find%20myself%20tearing%20up%20looking%20through%20them,%20remembering%20my%20childhood%20visits%20there.%20I%20would%20never%20say%20that%20photos%20aren%E2%80%99t%20valuable,%20that%20they%20aren%E2%80%99t%20launch%20points%20into%20memory.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EErin%E2%80%99s%20beautiful%20photos%20from%20my%20grandma%E2%80%99s%20house.%20See%20more%20of%20Erin%E2%80%99s%20work%20here.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20guess%20all%20I%20want%20to%20do%20is%20lament%20with%20you%20that%20photos%20%E2%80%94%20like%20words,%20actually,%20and%20memories%20%E2%80%94%20can%E2%80%99t%20do%20all%20we%20want%20them%20to%20do.%20They%20can%20only%20suggest%20an%20experience,%20not%20fully%20embody%20it.%20You%20can%E2%80%99t%20walk%20into%20them%20like%20a%20Lewisian%20wardrobe%20and%20be%20there%20all%20over%20again.%20I%20know%20that%E2%80%99s%20not%20a%20devastating%20truth%20because%20of%20what%20Christ%20has%20done%20for%20us.%20Instead,%20it%20strikes%20me%20as%20extremely%20human%20to%20find%20both%20the%20melancholy%20and%20the%20sacred%20in%20it.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
