The Hungry Harps household was long overdue to participate in one of Champion for Kid’s Simple Service Projects. During the last few months of my pregnancy and a couple months after we had the twins – I was a little housebound. Looking back – we hadn’t donated since September, far too long! %20%E2%80%93%20this%20month%E2%80%99s%20project%20was%20to%20give%20food%20to%20a%20local%20food%20bank.%20The%20reason%20being%20is%20this:%20when%20school%20lets%20out%20for%20summer,%20millions%20of%20children%20from%20low-income%20families%20are%20without%20school-provided%20breakfasts,%20lunches%20and%20after%20school%20snacks.%20The%20demand%20for%20food%20banks%20is%20so%20high%20that%20they%20often%20run%20out%20of%20food%20during%20this%20crucial%20time.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20what%20happened%20last%20year%20in%20our%20local%20community.%20The%20food%20bank%20completely%20ran%20out%20of%20food.%20How%20devastating%20is%20that?%20My%20husband%20and%20I%20knew%20right%20away%20that%20we%20would%20be%20giving%20our%20donation%20to%20the%20Orangevale%20Food%20Bank.%20A%20little%20bit%20about%20Orangevale%20Food%20Bank%20from%20their%20website:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%E2%80%9CAs%20an%20organization,%20we%20hope%20to%20make%20a%20positive%20impact%20in%20the%20Orangevale%20community%20by%20providing%20basic%20food%20and%20resources%20to%20families.%20But%20we%20also%20expect%20to%20facilitate%20participation%20from%20people%20within%20our%20community%20to%20help%20improve%20the%20lives%20of%20families%20in%20need%20through%20community%20outreach%20events,%20volunteering,%20food%20and%20clothing%20drives,%20and%20connecting%20people%20through%20a%20common%20purpose.%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHow%20beautiful%20is%20that?%20These%20are%20the%20type%20of%20people%20this%20world%20needs%20more%20of!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20decided%20to%20host%20our%20own%20little%20food%20drive,%20so%20I%20headed%20to%20Walmart%20(check%20out%20my%20shopping%20trip%20here%20on%20Google+)%20to%20buy%20food%20for%20our%20guests%20and%20something%20for%20us%20to%20contribute%20to%20the%20donation.%20Although%20I%20hadn%E2%80%99t%20seen%20them%20yet,%20I%20wanted%20to%20buy%20some%20Odwalla%20Bars%20for%20Kids%20to%20donate.%20When%20I%20found%20them%20and%20checked%20them%20out%20%E2%80%93%20I%20was%20sold!%20They%20each%20contain%2011%20to%2012%20grams%20of%20organic%20whole-grains.%20(I%20am%20a%20huge%20fan%20of%20organic!!)%20Plus,%20they%20are%20a%20good%20source%20of%20fiber%20(12%25%20DV)%20and%20calcium%20(30%25%20DV).%20I%20bought%2010%20boxes%20of%20them%20%E2%80%93%20leaving%20a%20few%20boxes%20for%20other%20customers%20too.%20:)%20Although%20my%20Walmart%20only%20had%20the%20Banana%20Dunk%20and%20Chocolate%20Chip%20Kick%20flavors,%20there%20is%20also%20a%20Strawberry%20Score.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20how%20the%20invitation%20to%20our%20food%20drive%20went%20%E2%80%93%20%E2%80%9Ccome%20over%20and%20bring%20food%20(non-perishable)%20that%20is%20suitable%20for%20children%20and%20I%20will%20give%20you%20a%20biscuits%20&%20gravy%20breakfast.%E2%80%9D%20Yes,%20I%20will%20totally%20use%20bribery%20for%20a%20good%20cause.%20I%20even%20threw%20in%20eggs%20and%20orange%20juice%20to%20sweeten%20the%20deal.%20:)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20had%20a%20total%20of%209%20people%20(including%20ourselves)%20participate%20in%20this%20donation%20and%20was%20able%20to%20collect:%2010%20boxes%20of%20Odwalla%20Bars%20for%20Kids,%203%20boxes%20cereal,%202%20packs%20of%20boxed%20juices,%204%20peanut%20butters,%206%20cans%20of%20tuna,%205%20macaroni%20&%20cheeses,%2010%20soups/pastas%20and%2013%20cans%20of%20fruit.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlso,%20I%20had%20mentioned%20to%20our%20guests%20that%20this%20was%20a%20project%20being%20sponsored%20by%20Champions%20for%20Kids%20&%20Odwalla%20and%20one%20of%20them%20brought%20a%20bunch%20of%20individual%20Odwalla%20bars%20%E2%80%93%20very%20cool!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Orangevale%20Food%20Bank%20is%20only%20open%20on%20Thursdays%20to%20accept%20donations%20%E2%80%93%20for%20all%20other%20times,%20they%20have%20set%20donation%20centers%20around%20town.%20We%20opted%20for%20the%20one%20at%20the%20Rec%20&%20Parks%20office.%20It%20made%20me%20sad%20to%20see%20trash%20inside%20the%20barrel%20%E2%80%93%20people%20are%20so%20quick%20to%20throw%20their%20garbage%20into%20the%20donation%20bin,%20but%20not%20so%20quick%20to%20put%20donation%20items%20in%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20explained%20to%20our%20sons%20(ages%202%20&%204)%20on%20the%20way%20to%20make%20the%20donation%20and%20also%20on%20the%20way%20home%20that%20all%20the%20food%20was%20for%20kids%20who%20are%20less%20fortunate%20than%20we%20are.%20Kids%20who%20don%E2%80%99t%20get%20ice%20cream%20&%20special%20trips%20to%20the%20quick%20mart%20for%20slushies,%20kids%20who%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20an%20endless%20supply%20of%20bananas%20sitting%20on%20the%20counter%20or%20even%20milk%20to%20drink%20with%20dinner.%20It%E2%80%99s%20important%20to%20me%20that%20they%20learn%20to%20help%20others%20who%20have%20less%20than%20them%20.%20Even%20if%20it%E2%80%99s%20just%20once%20a%20month%20and%20a%20little%20bit%20%E2%80%93%20it%E2%80%99s%20better%20than%20never%20giving%20anything.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20more%20information%20on%20Champions%20for%20Kids%20or%20on%20how%20you%20can%20help%20in%20your%20lo
