%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBacon-Wrapped%20Shrimp%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESeptember%20is%20always%20a%20strange%20month%20for%20us,%20likely%20because%20until%20this%20year%20we%20have%20always%20been%20tied%20to%20the%20academic%20calendar%20more%20than%20the%20regular%20one,%20so%20there%E2%80%99s%20always%20an%20undercurrent%20of%20change,%20even%20if%20it%E2%80%99s%20just%20the%20arrival%20of%20new%20students%20on%20campus.%20This%20is%20the%20first%20September%20since%20junior%20year%20of%20college%20in%20which%20neither%20of%20us%20live%20near%20or%20on%20a%20college%20campus,%20and%20I%20think%20that%20change%20has%20thrown%20both%20of%20us%20into%20serious%20funk.%20(Not%20to%20mention%20that%20it%E2%80%99s%20getting%20darker%20earlier%20and,%20well,%20that%20sucks%20too.)%20It%E2%80%99s%20why%20we%20haven%E2%80%99t%20been%20prolific%20for%20much%20of%20the%20month,%20but%20I%20declared%20that%20yesterday%20would%20mark%20the%20start%20of%20Operation:%20Abolish%20Mean%20Reds.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%E2%80%99s%20a%20multi-tactical%20plan%20that%20has%20unwittingly%20been%20in%20place%20for%20weeks:%20with%20the%20new%20season%20of%20our%20favorite%20shows%20finally%20starting%20up%20again,%20I%20had%20declared%20that%20we%20would%20mark%20the%20occasion%20properly%20by%20having%20a%20meal%20that%20was%20a%20nod%20to%20Parks%20and%20Recreation%20thanks%20to%20that%20show%E2%80%99s%20unabashed%20love%20of%20food.%20Just%20check%20out%20this%20montage%20dedicated%20to%20Ron%20Swanson%E2%80%99s%20dedication%20to%20steak,%20eggs%20and%20bacon%20to%20see%20what%20I%20mean.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETurkey%20Burger%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EShould%20you%20be%20surprised%20that%20bacon-wrapped%20shrimp%20were%20on%20the%20menu?%20Turkey%20burgers%20were%20too%E2%80%93but%20no%20salads.%20Salads%20are%20for%20rabbits.%20(This%20is%20what%20I%20told%20Michael%20when%20he%20got%20out%20the%20arugula%20to%20wash%20it%E2%80%93and%20he%20actually%20listened%20to%20me!%20I%20credit%20not%20eschewing%20salad%20on%20a%20regular%20basis%20for%20this%20exception.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%E2%80%99ll%20admit%20that%20the%20temptation%20was%20there%20to%20make%20waffles%20and%20douse%20them%20with%20whipped%20cream,%20but%20let%E2%80%99s%20be%20frank:%20not%20only%20do%20we%20not%20own%20a%20waffle%20maker,%20but%20the%20process%20seemed%20a%20bit%20fussy%20for%20a%20gloomy%20Thursday%20evening.%20We%20wanted%20to%20indulge%20but%20still%20remember%20that%20it%20was%20a%20weeknight%20and%20dinner%20needed%20to%20come%20together%20with%20some%20relative%20ease%E2%80%93given%20our%20moods%20lately%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20think%20%E2%80%9Ccomplicated%E2%80%9D%20was%20a%20word%20either%20one%20of%20us%20wanted%20to%20deal%20with%20in%20the%20kitchen.%20So%20I%20found%20some%20gorgeous%20Gulf%20shrimp%20Thursday%20morning%20at%20Whole%20Foods%20and%20left%20work%20to%20get%20things%20going%20as%20quickly%20as%20possible.%20Thanks%20to%20a%20test%20run%20on%20Sunday%20to%20try%20out%20the%20technique%20I%20had%20a%20good%20idea%20of%20how%20I%20wanted%20to%20do%20them,%20with%20the%20hope%20that%20they%20would%20be%20in%20the%20oven%20cooking%20by%20the%20time%20Michael%20got%20home%20so%20he%20could%20get%20to%20work%20on%20the%20burgers.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThanks%20to%20some%20lamb%20tikka%20masala%20from%20earlier%20in%20the%20week%20he%20had%20some%20leftovers%20of%20the%20spice%20mix%20he%20made%20for%20it%20and%20those,%20along%20with%20some%20salt,%20crushed%20red%20pepper%20and%20breadcrumbs%20mixed%20in%20with%20the%20turkey%20and%20yielded%20a%20pleasantly-spiced%20burger%20that%20still%20paired%20well%20with%20my%20belovedKerrygold%20Dubliner%20cheddar%20and%20some%20ketchup%20and%20mustard.%20The%20only%20thing%20preventing%20me%20from%20enjoying%20the%20whole%20thing%20was%20enjoying%20the%20shrimp-wrapped%20bacon%20a%20little%20too%20much%20(fortunately,%20that%E2%80%99s%20why%20leftovers%20exist).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20our%20most%20elegant%20meal%20by%20half,%20even%20for%20a%20weekday,%20but%20after%20a%20week%20of%20us%20both%20being%20a%20little%20crankier%20than%20usual%20it%20was%20nice%20to%20work%20together%20in%20the%20kitchen%20in%20a%20semblance%20of%20harmony,%20which%20was%20pretty%20effective%20in%20lifting%20our%20spirits.%20The%20cava%20I%20poured%20out%20to%20toast%20the%20memory%20of%20a%20friend%20helped%20even%20more,%20but%20I%20think%20laughing%20our%20asses%20off%20for%20a%20solid%20hour-and-a-half%20was%20what%20shoved%20the%20mean%20reds%20right%20out%20the%20door.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBacon-Wrapped%20Shrimp%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E12%20jumbo%20shrimp,%20peeled%20and%20deveined%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E6%20slices%20thick-cut%20bacon,%20halved,%20or%20use%20whole%20slices%20of%20thin-cut%20bacon%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEquipment:%20toothpicks%20or%20skewers,%20a%20baking%20sheet%20and%20a%20cooling%20rack.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20the%20oven%20to%20450%20degrees%20and%20line%20a%20baking%20sheet%20with%20foil,%20placing%20the%20cooling%20rack%20over%20it.%20Line%20a%20plate%20with%20paper%20towels%20and%20place%20bacon%20over%20it,%20cover,%20and%20microwave%20on%20high%20for%202-2%201/2%20minutes%20to%20render%20out%20some%20fat%20but%20still%20keep%20it%20pliable.%20Remove,%20wrap%20a%20piece%20around%20each%20shrimp,%20place%20on%20skewer%20or%20toothpick%20and%20arrange%20on%20the%20cooling%20rack.%20Place%20in%20oven%20and%20cook%20for%208-10%20minutes%20until%20bacon%20is%20browned%20and%20shrimp%20is%20opaque;%20remove%20from%20oven,%20let%20cool%20slightly%20and%20serve%20immediately.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMichael%E2%80%99s%20Almost-As-Good-As-Beef%20Turkey%20Burger%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMakes%203-4%20burgers%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECondiments%20you%20prefer%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMix%20turkey,%20shallots,%20salt,%20pepper%20and%20seasoning%20together%20and%20form%20into%20patties,%20freezing%20any%20that%20are%20unused.%20Place%20on%20medium-high%20heat%20grill%20pan%20or%20Griddler%20and%20cook%20until%20internal%20temperature%20is%20at%20least%20165%20degrees.%20Top%20with%20cheese,%20onions%20and%20any%20condiments%20you%20wish,%20or%20none%20at%20all.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
