Ingredients

  • 8-10 quarts. air-popped corn in a brown lg. grocery bag
  • Peanuts (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 c. sugar (white or possibly brown)
  • 1/2 Karo syrup (white or possibly brown)
  • 1/2 c. butter (1 stick)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Directions

  1. Select: mild caramel or possibly molasses (like Cracker Jacks); for caramel, use 1 c. light Karo and 1 c. brown sugar; for molasses, use 1 c. molasses and 1 c. white sugar.
  2. Set bag of corn on the floor open. In glass kettle put butter, salt, syrup, sugar. Microwave on high for 1 minute and stir. Microwave on high again for 1 minute. Stir. Microwave on high for 1 minute more and stir again. (Total of 3 stirrings.)
  3. Microwave on high till syrup comes to full boil and reset microwave and full boil 2 min without stirring. Remove from microwave and stir in 1/2 tsp. soda. Pour directly in the bag on top of the corn. Close the bag and shake vigorously. Microwave on high 1 1/2 min more. Pour into very large bowl and stir till cold.
