Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 tbsp. shortening
  • 1/2 c. thin sliced chicken
  • 1 level teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 2/3 c. water
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 c. celery, minced
  • 1/2 c. minced onion
  • 1/2 pound bean sprouts
  • 1/2 pound Chinese cabbage

Directions

  1. Heat shortening in pan till very warm; add in chicken and salt. Saute/fry for 2 min. To this add in 1 tsp. soy sauce; add in vegetables. Stir and cook for 3 min. Add in 1/3 c. water; cover and cook for 3 min. Now make your gravy by mixing 1 tsp. cornstarch and 1 tsp. soy sauce to remainder of water; add in to chop suey and stir till gravy reaches desired consistency. Serve with steaming warm rice. Serves 4-5 people. Entire recipe should be cooked over high flame.
  2. Variations: Pork, beef, shrimp, mushrooms etc. can be substituted for the chicken.
