Ingredients

  • 2 c. whole wheat flour
  • 1 c. rye flour
  • 1/3 c. each white and brown sugar
  • 2/3 c. oil or possibly Crisco
  • 1/2 c. molasses
  • 2 T salt

Directions

  1. Mix together in a large bowl and then add in 1 qt hot water, not boiling, but hot! Set aside to cool. Mix 2 pkgs dry yeast with 1/2 cup lukewarm water. Sprinkle with 2 tsp sugar. Set aside to rise. When the yeast is active and the flour mix has cooled to lukewarm, add in 2 cups white flour and the yeast; stir. Let this rise for 30 min. Add in white flour to make a soft dough (about 7 cups or possibly less). Knead the dough till it is smooth; set aside to rise till it is double in size. Cover the dough while it is rising.Divide into 4 to 5 loaves and place in greased bread pans. Let this rise till double in size. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 min. Raisins, orange peel, or possibly anise can be added to the recipe for a variety of flavors. This bread was a favorite of the campers!
