Sweet Tea Chicken: Tastes Just Like Summer

Recipe Summary & Steps

Nothing reminds me of summer like sipping on some sweet tea while the smell of barbecued chicken fills the air. So I thought…why not combine the two? I’ve been drinking this real brewed Pure Leaf tea from Lipton lately (chasing after the little dude doesn’t leave a whole lot of time to make freshly brewed sun tea, so I take shortcuts to be able to squeeze in these nice little summer moments for myself). I marinated some chicken in the pre-made tea and threw it on the grill for an awesome combination I like to call Sweet Tea Chicken. Summer is oh so sweet.

Sweet Tea Chicken: Tastes Like Summer

Ingredients

  • One 18-ounce bottle of unsweetened brewed tea
  • One 18-ounce bottle of lemon brewed tea
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/8 cup kosher salt
  • 2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp dried rosemary
  • 1 Tbsp pepper
  • 1 4-lb chicken, cut into pieces

Instructions

Mix all ingredients except chicken together in a medium pot over medium-high heat about three minutes, until mixture is hot and sugar is completely dissolved.

Let cool completely.

Place chicken and marinade in a resealable bag and marinate in the refrigerator overnight, up to 24 hours.

Preheat one side of the grill to 350 degrees.

Cook chicken on the unlit side of the grill, skin side down, for 20 minutes with the lid closed.

Turn chicken and cook another 50 minutes with the lid closed.

Transfer chicken to the lit portion of the grill and cook over direct heat for approximately 5 minutes on each side with the lid open, until the skin is crisp.

This recipe is made extra simple by using easy shortcut ingredients like pre-made bottled tea and packaged minced garlic. I’ve found that it honestly doesn’t change the taste when you’re simply using these ingredients to marinate, and summer time is too precious to be spend indoors preparing food!

The key to this recipe is to cook the chicken over indirect heat for a long time to get it nice and moist, and then finish it off over direct heat to make the outside really crispy.

I let it sit for a couple minutes before serving to 1) let it cool down a bit, because these suckers are REALLY hot after about 10 minutes over the flame and 2) let the flavors have a chance to settle into the chicken.

For the perfect beverage to accompany your sweet tea chicken, pour some of Lipton’s Pure Leaf tea over ice with sliced lemons and raspberries. Let it sit and melt together in the sun for a few minutes to give it the perfect hint of berry taste. Delicious.
