Patriotic Angel Food Cake Dessert

Recipe Summary & Steps

If baking is not your thing, but you still want to celebrate the holidays with something sweet this summer try this easy, Patriotic Angel Food Cake Dessert.

I’ll be the first to admit that baking is not my forte. That’s why though you’ll see dessert recipes here on my blog, they are not difficult to make in any way shape or form. And this Patriotic Angel Food Cake Dessert is just another prime example.

I first had an idea to actually make the layers of angel food cake into red, white and blue using pureed strawberries and blueberries; however, when I baked them, it was a total flop. Even though I used less water than the mix called for to allow for the extra liquid from the fruit, it still didn’t turn out well. So I just decided to turn the whole thing into a patriotic flag in a casserole dish. Nothing fancy as you can see, but you can still show support of the red, white and blue with this dessert.

I used a box angel food cake mix and prepared it according to package directions; which you only have to add water to the mix and bake. However, if you don’t want to spend the extra time, you could always purchase one already cooked from your grocery store. They generally sell them year round and are pretty inexpensive. Once the cake was cooled, I cut the cake into chunks using a serrated knife and placed them on the bottom of a casserole dish. Next, I topped it with a light non dairy topping (like Cool Whip); then placed sliced fresh strawberries and blueberries on top to reflect the American flag.

I told you this Patriotic Angel Food Cake Dessert was easy! A little too easy in fact and quick. But in reality, who wants to spend hours in the kitchen baking when you could be outside celebrating our nations history. My family dug into this thing like it was their job; suffice it to say they really liked it! Another thought is to layer the angel food cake, whipped topping and berries in a trifle dish. ~Enjoy!
