Best Marinated Grilled Hot Dogs

We are not huge hot dog fans at our house. We probably eat one hot dog a year on the 4th of July or Labor Day. I made these Marinated Grilled Hot Dogs for a cookout last weekend and they were a HUGE hit! We were really impressed with how delicious these hot dogs tasted. If all hot dogs were this delicious, we would eat them all the time! Chicken Legs and I both ate two for lunch and saved the leftovers for dinner. They were really, really good!! We both agreed they were going on our Labor Day cookout menu!

How to Make Perfectly Grilled Hot Dogs

As the recipe name says, these hot dogs are marinated before cooking on the grill. I like to cut small slits on two sides of the hot dogs before putting them in the marinade. This allows MORE flavor to get in the hot dogs! It also helps the hot dogs not shrivel up on the grill.

The marinade for these Marinated Grilled Hot Dogs is super simple - chili sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Whisk up the marinade and let the hot dogs hang out for about 15 or 20 minutes or up to overnight. I personally like to make these the night before we are grilling and let them sit in the refrigerator until we are ready to grill.

Hot dogs don't take very long to grill. We cooked these hot dogs on a charcoal grill and it took about 5 or 6 minutes. Cook the hot dogs until they have a little char on them. Be careful not to overcook the hot dogs.

How to Cook Marinated Grilled Hot Dogs Without a Grill

Don't have a grill? No problem! You can cook these hot dogs on the stove. I like to use a cast iron skillet. Preheat the pan over medium heat without oil. Add the hot dogs and cook until they are browned, about 5 minutes.

Can I Freeze Cooked Hot Dogs?

Yes! Cooked hot dogs will last 3 or 4 days in the refrigerator. You can also freeze any leftover hot dogs for a quick meal later. Freeze in an air-tight container or freezer ziplock bag. This is great if you made a lot of hot dogs for a crowd and have some leftover. I don't know about you, but I always make too much food for parties!

What to Serve with Marinated Grilled Hot Dogs

As I said, these Marinated Grilled Hot Dogs are a new favorite! They are super easy to make and taste great. They are perfect for cookouts and tailgating in a few weeks! We love to serve these hot dogs with some chips, potato salad, and baked beans. Here are a few of our favorite recipes from the blog that go great with these yummy Marinated Grilled Hot Dogs:

ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup chili sauce
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1-1/2 Tbsp mustard
  • 1 T brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt

instructions:

With a small, sharp knife, make cuts at an angle in 2 rows down each hot dog, about 1/2 inch apart, cutting part way into the hot dog. The cuts should look like rounded half circles.

Mix together the chili sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Pour into a large ziplock bag, add hot dogs and let marinate for 15-20 minutes up to overnight.

Light grill. Grill the hot dogs until nicely charred and the cuts open up, about 4-5 minutes total.
