Recipe Summary & Steps

Hurricane Cocktail February 27, 2019 by meggan 0 comments » Jump to Recipe  ↓ Print Recipe  ❒ Pin Share Tweet This Hurricane Cocktail is a classic recipe from the French Quarter in New Orleans. Made with two kinds of rum, three kinds of juice, and grenadine, it’s sweet, fruity, and practically required for Mardi Gras! Serve it in plastic cups while wearing plastic bead necklaces for maximum authenticity. What is in a hurricane cocktail? Two kinds of rum, white and dark, three fruit juices, lime, orange, and passion fruit, a splash of simple syrup, and grenadine.  All ingredients are shaken in a cocktail shaker, poured over ice, and garnished with an orange wheel and maraschino cherry. MY LATEST RECIPES What does a hurricane taste like? A flavor combination of sour and sweet, the fruit juices provide the sour and the rums, simple syrup, and grenadine provide the sweet.  Depending on your personal preference, you can increase the sour or sweet components by an ounce to suit your taste buds. Just out of curiosity, can you walk around New Orleans with alcohol? Yes.  New Orleans lacks strict open container laws, but it is required that you drink alcoholic beverages in a plastic cup.  That’s the reason most hurricane cocktail recipes include the mention of serving it in a plastic cup. Authenticity at its best! What is simple syrup for cocktails? Simple syrup is, for lack of a better word, simply a solution of sugar in water.  Since the sugar is already dissolved in the water, it easily mixes with the other ingredients and you don’t have to worry about all the sugar sinking to the bottom of your glass. Can you buy simple syrup at the store? Yes, it will be labeled as such in most liquor and grocery stores. How do you make simple syrup? In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar. Cook 2 minutes or until the sugar is completely dissolved. Use the amount you need for each cocktail and store the remainder of the syrup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a month. What is a substitute for simple syrup? Honey, agave, or maple syrup can be used in replace of simple syrup.  They are a great natural substitute for white sugar and are similar in viscosity.  Just keep in mind each sweetener will impart a different flavor.
