Ingredients

Cost per serving $0.47 view details
  • 3 3/4 cups warm tap water
  • 1 2/3 cups instant nonfat dry milk
  • 2 - 4 Tbsp. store-bought, plain yogurt with active yogurt cultures

Directions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the tap water and dry milk powder
  2. Stir it very well and let it sit for a few minutes. Then stir it again. All of the dry milk should be dissolved.
  3. Heat the milk over medium low heat until it reaches 180 degrees F. This kills off any competing bacteria so that the yogurt will respond better to the acidophilus cultures.
  4. Remove from the stove and allow to cool to 115 degrees F. If the milk is hotter than this it will kill off the yogurt cultures.
  5. Add the store-bought plain yogurt to the warm milk.
  6. Stir well. Allow it to sit for a few minutes and stir a final time. This should dissolve the store-bought yogurt completely.
  7. Pour the mixture into a clean quart jar and screw the lid on.
  8. Place jar in small cooler with hot tap water (<115 degrees) keeping it warm for approximately 8 hours or until it reaches desired firmness.
