%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20today%20I%20have%20decided%20to%20share%20some%20tips%20on%20mashed%20potatoes.%20Mashed%20potatoes%20are%20not%20food%20reserved%20just%20for%20the%20holidays%20%E2%80%93%20at%20least%20not%20in%20my%20house.%20However,%20they%20are%20the%20foundation%20of%20a%20Thanksgiving%20plate.%20(Literally,%20my%20husband%20will%20cover%20his%20plate%20with%20mashed%20potatoes%20and%20put%20everything%20else%20on%20top%20of%20them!)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPeople%20make%20mashed%20potatoes%20in%20many,%20many%20ways.%20I%20even%20make%20them%20in%20different%20ways%20depending%20on%20the%20flavor%20and%20style%20I%E2%80%99m%20going%20for.%20At%20Thanksgiving,%20I%E2%80%99m%20going%20for%20creamy%20and%20fluffy.%20Here%20are%20my%20tried%20&%20true%20potato%20tips:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20Use%20Yukon%20Gold%20potatoes:%20they%20consistently%20make%20the%20fluffiest%20mashed%20potatoes%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20Don%E2%80%99t%20skimp%20on%20the%20butter%20but%20go%20easy%20on%20the%20milk.%20Let%E2%80%99s%20say%20I%E2%80%99m%20making%20a%202lb%20bag%20of%20mashed%20potatoes.%20I%20will%20use%20two%20sticks%20of%20softened%20butter.%20Plop%20them%20in%20the%20bowl%20and%20dump%20the%20hot,%20drained%20potatoes%20on%20top%20of%20the%20butter%20to%20melt%20it.%20I%20will%20then%20add%20milk%20in%20little%20bits%20as%20I%20am%20mashing%20the%20potatoes%20%E2%80%93%20that%20way%20I%20can%20control%20the%20consistency.%20How%20much%20milk?%20I%20never%20measure%20but%20I%20promise%20I%20never%20add%20more%20than%201/4%20cup%20at%20a%20time.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.%20Use%20a%20hand%20mixer.%20WHA?!?%20I%20can%20hear%20some%20of%20you%20screaming%20in%20protest.%20I%20agree,%20hand%20mashed%20potatoes%20lend%20a%20lovely%20rustic%20touch.%20A%20potato%20ricer%20can%20indeed%20produce%20a%20delicious%20side%20dish.%20But%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20Thanksgiving%20and%20the%20hectic,%20crowded%20kitchen%20it%20brings%20I%20want%20something%20fast%20and%20guaranteed%20to%20give%20me%20some%20fluffy%20spuds.%20The%20hand%20mixer%20never%20lets%20me%20down.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4.%20Seasonings.%20Here%E2%80%99s%20where%20things%20get%20interesting.%20Most%20times%20I%20am%20just%20a%20salt%20&%20pepper%20girl%20with%20the%20occasional%20dash%20of%20garlic%20powder.%20Other%20times%20I%E2%80%99ll%20sneak%20in%20a%20generous%20dollop%20of%20sour%20cream%20or%20goat%20cheese.%20Mmmmmm%E2%80%A6%20and%20while%20digging%20around%20my%20recipe%20files,%20I%20came%20across%20this%20idea%20from%20Cooking%20Light.%20If%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20try%20this%20on%20Thanksgiving,%20I%20can%20promise%20you%20I%20will%20be%20trying%20it%20out%20on%20my%20dinner%20table%20soon:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20Peel%20and%20chop%20your%20potatoes,%20place%20them%20in%20a%20large%20pot%20just%20covered%20with%20water.%20Bring%20to%20a%20boil%20and%20boil%20for%2015-20%20minutes%20%E2%80%93%20until%20fork%20tender.%20Drain%20and%20place%20in%20a%20large%20bowl.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20Combine%20milk%20and%20butter%20in%20a%20microwave-safe%20bowl,%20and%20microwave%20on%20high%202%20minutes%20or%20until%20butter%20melts.%20Add%20this%20milk%20mixture%20to%20potatoes.%20Mash%20(or%20mix%20with%20a%20hand%20mixer!)%20to%20desired%20consistency.%20Stir%20in%20buttermilk%20and%20remaining%20ingredients.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThanksgiving%20Favorites%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHave%20fun%20with%20your%20menu%20planning!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
