Cumin Rice

Cumin Rice by Joyce Leung

This rice is a delicious mix of cumin and cinnamon. It provides a nice, slightly sweet flavor, that is a perfect complement to any middle eastern dish. The only dishes I would avoid serving this with are sweet dishes with dates, figs, etc. I served it with my Braised Lamb with Beans. It was great!

Moroccan Fish Soup

Moroccan Fish Soup by John Spottiswood

This is a flavorful, spicy soup that happens to be Moroccan but will remind you of fish soups found from Spain to Russia. It is a classic! Serves 4 as a main dish, 6 as an appetizer.

Jamaican "Beef" Patties by Kiki Thompson

These are kind of similar to Mexican empinadas, but spicy I was kind of skeptical at first, but you can not tell the difference…it’s all about the seasoning when it comes down…

Moroccan Bean Dip - Bessara by John Spottiswood

If you like hummus, you will also like this simple and tasty bean dip. Fava beans are preferred, but Lima beans work well too. You can thin down the dip with chicken or vegetable stock to make a tasty bean soup.

Baked date pudding

Baked date pudding by Peter Brown

A Cape Malay recipe as reproduced on I Africa "an olden time dessert learnt from granny." It always takes me back to my very young childhood days when I used to spend rainy days in my gran's large old kitchen in Bredasdorp with its wood-burning stove, keeping warm and enjoying the smells that came from the oven.
