Sure, everyone enjoys a box of chocolates, but imagine your loved one’s face when you gave them these homemade bites of bliss. Better yet, imagine their face when they try one. We fused together tender cake and rich, smooth truffle filling, then encased it in a chocolate shell; obviously, sparks are going to fly.

I know what you’re thinking: cake balls are way too fancy for you to make yourself. Wrong. Here’s all you need to do, you love bird you:

Melt together loads of chocolate and a tad bit of cream

Bake up a boxed cake mix

Puree together

Roll into balls

Dunk in chocolate

That’s five steps AND five ingredients. V-Day doesn’t get any easier than that. But I guarantee that one bite of these luscious chocolate devils will leave your loved one floating in a sea of chocolate ecstasy, convinced you spent all day in the kitchen. Here’s the real test that proved these cake balls are killer. They received approval from Mother Cookie, who doesn’t enjoy things that are too sweet; she thought they were just right. Then, they were given two thumbs up from my boss, who is a huge chocolate lover. I think she’d have given them four thumbs up if she had more hands.

So, these confections pleased both the chocolate connoisseur and the sugar skeptic. That means you’re guaranteed to love them too. Frankly, I don’t care if you have a Valentine or not; you need to make these babies for yourself.

A Few Tips Before You Get Cooking:

You can up the chocolate content by using chocolate cake mix instead of vanilla. I had vanilla on hand, and it turned out just fine, as you can tell.

These truffles are delicious year-round; just skip the heart-shaped sprinkle.

Make these extra fancy-looking by placing them in Valentine’s Day mini cupcake wrappers.

You can use dark chocolate to create a deeper, darker flavor.

Chocolate Truffle Cake Balls

By The Smart Cookie Cook

Ingredients:

  • 6 oz. milk chocolate, chopped
  • 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp. heavy cream
  • 1 box yellow cake mix (I used Pillsbury)
  • 4 cups milk chocolate chips
  • Heart-shaped sprinkles

Directions:

Place the first 6 oz. milk chocolate in a large heatproof bowl. Set aside.

Pour cream into a medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 30-second intervals until it starts to simmer. Immediately pour over chocolate. Let sit for 2 minutes then whisk until completely smooth. Let cool to room temperature.

Bake cake according to box directions. Let cool.

Break cake into chunks and place in food processor. Process until it forms fine crumbs. Pour ¾ of the chocolate in and pulse until it starts to come together. Puree until completely smooth. Test to see if you can form it into balls. If it’s too dry, add the rest of the chocolate. Transfer to a large bowl. Cover and freeze until firm, about 30 minutes.

Line a baking sheet with wax or parchment paper. Set aside.

Place chocolate chips in a deep microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup. Microwave on high for 30-second intervals, whisking in between, until completely melted. This should only take about 4 intervals.

Form cake mixture into scant-tablespoon-sized balls and use a fork to dunk in chocolate. Let excess chocolate drip off then place on prepared baking sheet. Place a heart sprinkle on top of each one.

Place balls in fridge until set, about 1 hour. Keep stored in fridge in an air-tight container.
