Also, known as Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake. Mayonnaise sounds like a weird cake ingredient, but it just replaces the eggs and oil. Actually, the cake was "invented" by Hellmann's because of food shortages during the war. It used Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise. But, Kraft's Foods was not to be upstaged, so they did their own recipe and promoted it on their Miracle Whip Salad Dressing (a very popular alternative to mayo). One wonders if they were/are as competitive as Coke/Pepsi!

This recipe works best with Miracle Whip instead of real mayonaise.

It comes out virually the same for me, regardless. But, if you have a strong personal preference, OK. I have used both, whatever I had on hand, in the past. And, cooks need to know that they can use either one in making the cake. I'll be sticking with mayonnaise, and you can do MW!

I cannot tell the difference between mayo and Miracle Whip in most things. I know other people can or have a preference so go with what you know and love. BTW, there is no Miracle Whip in the UK, but they do have Salad Cream instead. It is available in Germany but spelled Miracel Whip! Go figure.
