Bok Choy Sauteed with Garlic & Ginger Recipe

Bok Choy is a member of the cabbage family and is loaded with vitamins A and C. This leafy green vegetable is good in stir fry, steamed or sauteed as in this recipe. There are a few different varieties, some have a larger stalk and are tougher while the baby bok choy is smaller and the stalks are very tender. You need to really rinse the bok choy as it is quite sandy. I put it in a large bowl and keep rinsing the water. I really wanted to use the baby bok choy but since that wasn’t available I have used bok choy tips. This recipe is adapted from Steamy Kitchen web site.

  • 2 pounds bok choy
  • 3-4 cloves garlic
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 tablespoon tamari
  • 1/4 cup toasted sesame seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil


  1. Chop the bok choy and rinse thoroughly to remove all the dirt and drain. Toast the sesame seeds in a dry frying pan until golden, you will be able to smell the toastiness, set aside.
  2. Heat a wok or large frying pan and add the olive oil, swirl it around some and then add the ginger and garlic, Saute for a minute or two being careful not to let it burn.
  3. Add the chopped bok choy to the pan and stir to coat with the garlic, ginger and oil. If it’s to dry add a little water or veggie broth. Mine had plenty of moisture left from it’s water bath. Allow to steam a couple of minutes. Add a few drops of sesame oil and the tamari soy sauce. Serve!
