About me

Advocating for sustainability in food and farming is as much a part of my legacy as the restaurant Chez Panisse, which I opened in Berkeley in 1971, and which has gained worldwide renown for its dishes based on local, seasonal, and top-of-the-line ingredients. In 1996, already a celebrated chef recognized as the progenitor of California cuisine, I established the Chez Panisse Foundation. I wanted to “encourage those Chez Panisse values in the community around me, and now throughout the country.”
