The Belmont Jewel – Signature Cocktail for the Belmont Stakes Recipe

- 1 oz lemon juice (about one lemon)
- 1.5 oz simple syrup (Equal amounts sugar and water heated until sugar dissolves. Cool before using.)

,%20watch%20the%20race%20and%20leave%20to%20go%20back%20to%20cutting%20the%20grass%20or%20washing%20the%20car.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENo%20one%20had%20a%20favorite%20but%20still,%20we%20all%20got%20into%20the%20race%20from%20the%20starting%20gate%20and%20%E2%80%98my%E2%80%99%20horse%20was%20easy%20to%20pick.%20Poor%20thing.%20Started%20in%20an%20outside%20gate%20and%20had%20to%20move%20quite%20a%20distance%20to%20the%20inside%20but%20he%20held%20his%20own.%20He%20stayed%20close%20to%20the%20lead%20and%20we%20all%20decided%20this%20horse%20was%20our%20hero;%20the%20little%20engine%20that%20could.%20As%20the%20race%20came%20to%20a%20close%20and%20the%20leader%20stayed%20his%20ground%20it%20looked%20close%20but%20it%20was%20between%20the%20leader%20and%20%E2%80%98our%E2%80%99%20horse%20and%20son%20of%20a%20gun;%20the%20horse%20whose%20name%20I%20had%20not%20known%20before%20the%20race%20took%20the%20win.%20American%20Pharoah.%20I%20found%20out%20later%20he%20was%20a%20favorite%20but%20he%20was%20also%20fighting%20tradition.%20Starting%20in%20position%2018,%20one%20horse%20scratched%20so%20he%20moved%20to%20number%2017.%20No%20horse%20had%20ever%20won%20the%20derby%20from%20position%2017.%20This%20was%20destiny!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeading%20into%20the%20Preakness%20I%20continued%20with%20my%20short%20party%20tradition%20and%20my%20offering%20of%20the%20race%E2%80%99s%20signature%20cocktail.%20Not%20as%20well%20known%20as%20the%20Mint%20Julep,%20the%20Preakness%20also%20has%20a%20signature%20cocktail%20called%20The%20Black-Eyed%20Susan%20so%20of%20course%20I%20had%20those%20made,%20everyone%20grabbed%20their%20cocktail%20and%20that%20race%20looked%20too%20easy%20when%20our%20boy%20won%20handily.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20now%20it%E2%80%99s%20time%20for%20the%20third%20leg%20of%20the%20Triple%20Crown;%20some%20might%20think%20that%20a%20series%20of%20races%20but%20I%20might%20think%20of%20it%20more%20as%20a%20series%20of%20cocktails!%20The%20Belmont%20Stakes%20signature%20cocktail%20is%20hardly%20that.%20Talk%20about%20an%20identity%20crisis%E2%80%A6this%20one%20has%20that%20certainly.%20Not%20like%20the%20julep,%20this%20race%20has%20seen%20different%20cocktails%20come%20and%20go.%20Until%201997%20the%20White%20Carnation%20was%20the%20signature%20cocktail;%20it%20was%20replaced%20by%20the%20Belmont%20Breeze,%20a%20complicated%20drink%20created%20by%20famed%20mixologist%20Dale%20DeGroff.%20Though%20popular%20for%20several%20years,%20the%20folks%20in%20charge%20decided%20a%20less%20complicated%20and%20easier%20to%20prepare%20drink%20would%20be%20more%20fitting;%20they%20do%20make%20tens%20of%20thousands%20of%20them%20each%20race%20day.%20Happy%20that%20I%20only%20make%20a%20handful%20I%20was%20still%20very%20pleased%20that%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20have%20to%20buy%20a%20bottle%20of%20Harvey%E2%80%99s%20Bristol%20Cream%20Sherry;%20I%20have%20enough%20stock%20on%20hand%20that%20bottles%20used%20for%20only%20one%20cocktail%20seldom%20fit%20into%20my%20game%20plan.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEnter%20the%20Belmont%20Jewel.%20I%E2%80%99ll%20tell%20you,%20this%20baby%20is%20bourbon%20forward.%20I%20like%20bourbon%20but%20sometimes,%20and%20this%20was%20the%20case%20here,%20I%20think%20it%20could%20use%20some%20toning%20down.%20So%20I%E2%80%99ve%20added%20a%20bit%20of%20sparkling%20soda.%20Not%20only%20to%20temper%20the%20bourbon%20a%20bit,%20but%20hey%20who%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20like%20a%20bit%20of%20fizz,%20right?%20While%20the%20original%20recipe%20calls%20for%20lemonade,%20I%20thought%20it%20silly%20to%20make%20a%20pitcher%20of%20lemonade%20to%20try%20this%20one%20cocktail%20and%20have%20substituted%20with%20lemon%20juice%20and%20simple%20syrup.%20Drinks%20for%20a%20crowd?%20Then%20go%20ahead%20and%20use%20lemonade%20in%20place%20of%20both%20the%20lemon%20juice%20and%20syrup.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20liked%20this%20cocktail.%20I%20think%20the%20name%20is%20befitting%20the%20third%20jewel%20in%20the%20Triple%20Crown%20and%20the%20ease%20of%20preparation%20speaks%20more%20to%20my%20party%20planner%20ideas.%20Nearby%20on%20Saturday%20at%204:15pm?%20Come%20on%20over%20for%20a%20party.%20We%E2%80%99ll%20be%20done%20by%204:30;%20let%E2%80%99s%20hope%20we%20can%20hoop%20and%20holler%20just%20a%20bit%20when%20my%20new%20favorite%20horse%20wins%20the%20whole%20doggone%20thing.%20Cheers!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInstructions%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECombine%20bourbon,%20lemon%20juice,%20simple%20syrup%20and%20pomegranate%20juice%20in%20a%20cocktail%20shaker%20and%20fill%20shaker%20with%20ice.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFill%20a%20lowball%20glass%20with%20ice,%20pour%20mixture%20over%20ice%20and%20top%20with%20sparkling%20water.%20Stir.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGarnish%20with%20a%20lemon%20wheel.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERoot%20for%20American%20Pharoah.%20:)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E6.6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ehttp://www.creative-culinary.com/the-belmont-jewel/%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECreative%20Culinary%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
