Stuffed Cabbage ( Golabki)

A Polish dish consisting of ground meat and rice mixture wrapped in boiled cabbage leaves and then topped with a tomato sauce and baked in the oven

Ingredients

  • 1 Medium head of cabbage
  • 2 C cooked white or brown rice
  • 1 3/4 lb Ground chuck
  • 4 Small or 2 large potatoes
  • 2 Cans tomato soup
  • 1 Can water
  • 2 C Tomato sauce
  • 1 Small onion
  • 1 tsp. Onion powder
  • 1 tsp. Garlic powder
  • Louisiana hot sauce to taste
  • 1/4 C Brown sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Cut around core of cabbage and try to remove as much as possible
  2. Boil cabbage in a large pot of salted water
  3. Keep pulling the leaves off as they cook and get tender
  4. Meanwhile cabbage is cooking cook rice
  5. When rice is cooked put on a plate and let cool
  6. After you have all of your cabbage leaves free and cooled cut the large vein out of each leaf
  7. If the leafs are large after you have deveined them cut the large leafs in half set aside
  8. When rice has cooled mix the beef , rice, small onion chopped, salt and pepper until well combined, set aside
  9. In another bowl mix together the tomato soup 1 can of water, tomato sauce, red pepper sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder,salt and pepper set aside
  10. Take a small amount of meat and wrap in cabbage leaf
  11. Repeat process till all the meat is gone and place in a large casserole dish
  12. Peel and cut up potatoes and add on top of the rolled cabbages in the casserole
  13. Top the cabbages and potatoes with the tomato sauce mixture
  14. Bake in a 350 degree for 2 hours
  15. If you roll your cabbages large you should get about 10 -12 Golabkis
  16. Or if you roll them small you will get 25-30 Golabkis
